OOTD: Errand Running

Even when I'm running errands I like to look somewhat decent.
My hair is twisted up under the beanie with a lil left out in the front just cuz.
Excuse the cell phone pics, it was all very spur of the moment.

#thelazydaystruggle

Supposed to be finishing up my Christmas shopping today since it's my day off but this bed is calling my name.  If I can't do it from my bed then I don't wanna bother.  Since I'm not leaving the house I retwisted my hair so I can some more length for the rest of the week.  Which means you'll be seeing my day 3 hair and hopefully an outfit post because I have my work holiday dinner tomorrow night. (It's been a lonnnng time since I've done one of those)
But in the meantime I'll leave you with my "Yeah it's not gonna happen today" face/hair.

Hibiscus Hassle

Well it's the day after wash day aka the dreaded day one.  It's also the first day after rinsing my random hibiscus mix out of my hair.
And...
I don't think I'll be doing it again.  I figured leaving it in overnight would have left some sort of color deposit on my greys. Nope.  Plus rinsing it out was the biggest pain in the ass.  Because it's so grainy and my hair is so kinky-coily all it did was get stuck.  I was able to get rid of most of it when I detangled my hair but that was a much longer process than it typically is.
2 fails equals a NO in my book.

I did have the bright idea to boil it as a tea and strain all the particles out so if/when my inner mixtress wants to come out, I'll try it that way.
I would've taken some pics today but I despise day 1 hair so we'll just start with day 2 tomorrow.

A lot of people say that natural hair is too involved and there's so much that goes into it.  And while that can be true, I've found my hair always looks/acts better when I keep it simple.  Because of that I'll be backing off the ayurvedic treatments and just sticking to conditioners, moisturizers and oils.
I have a couple products I need to review so be on the look out for those.

Time for some action

It's been a while since I've really done anything to my hair.  Since mid-November I kept it away from the cold (or what I thought was cold, so far the weather here in NY has been pretty decent) by doing some kinky twists. Fast forward to last Saturday when I took them out and finally got to see my hair again.  As much as I love the convenience of the twists, I take better care of my hair when it's out.

Wash day has come around again and I got kinda antsy.  All I wanted to do was play mixtress.  I remembered that I have about 2 lbs of hibiscus powder that I haven't used to why not test it out and see how I like it.  Aside from me hoping to gain a red tint to my hair through regular use, hibiscus powder is said to promote hair growth, reduce shedding while adding shine and softness.  Anything that claims to do those, I gotta try.

Right now I have a container of about 5 heaping teaspoons of hibiscus powder, a teaspoon of JBCO and about a cup or so of conditioner (part Yes To Cucumbers, part Tressemme Naturals)

It's kinda making me want some red velvet cake but that's besides the point.

I plan on throwing it on my hair right before I head to sleep and seeing how it turns out in the AM.
Wish me luck.

For the Product Junkie in You

I think I was better off staying away from my Google Reader.  Once I opened it up to check out the blogs I follow, I was introduced to these two:

Just great.
Another reason to cry broke.
BUT
In my desire to become a better blogger, I find they're a great opportunity to try new products and share my highs and lows.
(any excuse to feed my addiction plus it's always a good day when you get a package in the mail)

Basically, each box contains 5 or 6 samples of products based on a beauty profile you create when you sign up. (CurlBox is geared towards natural hair and Birchbox handles skin, hair, makeup, fragrance)  CurlBox hasn't officially launched yet so I don't know the price point but BirchBox is $10 a month which isn't too bad in my opinion.

If you're interested, check out:
OR if you've tried Birchbox already, let me know what you think.

Holiday Sale: Miss Jessie's BOGO

While I'm on a strict budget because I have a move and a wedding to save for (yep I'm getting married, insert squeals and shrieks of excitement here) I am going to become the ultimate bargain hunter and will document all my shopping finds here.

First up I want to let all my #naturalhair readers know that my favorite time of the year is here.  Stores and companies are giving deep discounts and I couldn't be happier.  Let's start with Miss Jessie's. Their annual BOGO (Buy One, Get One FREE) is back from November 20th to December 20th.  As much as I adore their Super Sweetback Treatment, it's too damn expensive so this is the one time in the year I stock up.  And if I happen to run out like I did this year, I think I've finally found an affordable alternative (more on that later)

The BOGO sale didn't include Target stores or Target.com last year but this year it does.  If you are interested in giving Miss Jessie's a try, this is the perfect opportunity to do it, especially since Target's return policy is pretty good.

If you take advantage of the sale, let me know what you got and how you like it

Rihanna- We Found Love

Rihanna on WhoSay

The first single from her upcoming album, Talk that Talk, I couldn't get into this song the first few times I heard it and I'm a die haird for anything RiRi.  But hearing it in a bar a while back helped me sorta, kinda tolerate it.  But this video... made me a believer.

It's intense.  While I'm sure everyone is gonna be talking bout the obvious CB lookalike. The message of addiction and abuse is what grabbed me.  Sometimes it's too easy to become dependent knowing that he/she/it doesn't contribute to anything positive in your life.  I didn't see this video coming to be honest but I couldn't be happier that it wasn't the typical dancing in the club, strobe lights pulsing to the beat.

Go ahead Rihanna, #talkthattalk

What do you think of the video?

Up and Away

I'm not even going to discuss how long it has been since I've posted anything and I honestly don't have a good reason for it.  Instead I'm just going to post these updo pics I took and hope I'll be forgiven for being a bad blogger.  (Excuse my face, it was a long work day) I pulled my hair back because it wasn't working not matter what I tried to do to it.  Now that my hair is growing out I think I'm going to start doing more updos as a styling option.

What do you think?

It's been a while...

My last post was a long time ago and while I would like to say that you missed out on some things, you really haven't.  My hair had been twisted up for the last month and I don't know if I fell into a slump or something but I had no inspiration/motivation to get dressed.  Everything was very basic and not really worth posting but I would like to say that's over.  I woke up this morning dedicated myself to branching out.  I have a tendency of starting things and then letting them fall to the wayside.  So my birthday gift to myself (yep today's my birthday) is to take a chance and see how far I can push myself.

I did take the kinky twists out on Sunday nite and I just wanted to show a sneak peek of what Fro is looking like now.  I fall in love with her more and more everyday.

Formerly known as...

When I started this blog I wanted to address any and everything that interests me, so MeEntirely seemed like the perfect fit.  Flash forward to a year or so after starting to blog, I read the title and realized it came across super self-involved.  Spur of the moment,  I switched to StyleStage but in reality I hated it just as much.  After some thinking, it is about my loves, my interests, my thoughts, and interactions with my fellow naturalistas and fashionistas.  But the best way to convey all that is to give it my name.  (Ok not my given name but you get it)

I now introduce you to MARCYSUBURBS.

I hope to step my blogging game up; start some giveaways and features while still including all the content that kept you visiting in the first place.

Thanks for the support, I really do appreciate it.

Mama, I made it!

Who is that girl in the first picture? She looks so familiar?

I know, I know it's a picture but I've been obsessing over the hair and looks of Le Coil since I was transitioning so when I was approached to take a picture, I felt like I had arrived! Plus it was on a bummy day & still got compliments! Hell Yes! So what my hair is tucked away, I couldn't be happier!

A Year and a Day

Here's my day 2 hair and a sneak peek at my outfit today.  Still not in love but it's getting bigger slowly, by Thursday, Friday... It's gonna be a problem!

Happy Anniversary (to her)!

Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of the day I BC'd.  Now I would've shown my hair from yesterday but I just washed it and as you may know by now I HATE day 1 hair.  So here are pics from Sunday nite before I washed my hair (excuse the gross-ness).  I wanted to show comparison pics but lucky for me (insert angry, annoyed face here) my computer crashed not too long ago so I can't find pictures from when I first chopped my hair off.

All I could really find were these...

VERSUS

Not too bad.  Here's to the future, Fro.

Fitting Room Fun

Why put up a picture of me randomly trying on clothes in a fitting room?

Because I loved my hair that day, #thatisall.

My Met Gala 2011 top 5

A couple nights ago was the Met Gala which paid tribute to the late great Alexander McQueen (I still wanna get my hands on that "leopard" scarf with the skulls replacing the spots)

Some were hits, some were misses (like I get it Janelle Monae, your look is classic but you can still throw a dress on and look just as classic)

I'm gonna focus on my "wows"

Tea Time

(source)

Lately every time I henna my hair, I am left rinsing and rinsing and rinsing only to have bits and pieces of herbs still left in my hair.  Super frustrating and it makes me not wanna deal with it.  But I love the effects of henna: it helps define my coils, reduce frizz, and there's a (slight) color payoff.

So what's a girl to do?  Google of course.

After doing a little bit of investigating I realized that I could do a henna rinse.  I had never really heard of anyone doing it but I figure what could it hurt?

It's really simple to do. I grabbed my henna, amla, and brahmi (about 1/4 cup of each) and a few cups of water (didn't measure it) and simmered it on the stove for 20 minutes or so.  Once it came to a rolling boil, I added a teabag.  It was this green tea that I bought to drink but since it was gross I figured why waste it and decided to use it for my hair.  I let it stay on the heat for another 5 mins then set the mix aside to cool.

In the meantime I shampooed my hair with my Bee Mine bar.  I strained the henna rinse into a bowl then placed a bowl in the kitchen sink so I could collect the rinse to use over and over.  I then proceeded to pour it for about 10 mins or so.  Please make sure it cools down before you do it because scalp burns are never cute.  After most of the rinse made it's way down the drain I deep conditioned with L'Oreal EverStrong made sure my hair was rinsed clean.  I found no left-over grit which was a plus.  As I write this my hair is braided up so we'll see how conditioning it was in the morning.

I'll follow up tomm

Sidenote: I'm ONE WEEK away from my 1 year anniversary of when I did the BC!  Time was flown by and I can't wait to see what year 2 brings.  Hopefully a lot more blogging.

"I'd End Up Really Feeling You"*

Solange at Elle's Women in Music

(Source)

I love everything Solange Knowles.  Anyone that knows me I'm partial to her over the other Knowles sister.

Her hair, her style, her music.

(I also love me some Khloe K , the other "underdog" of famous sisters but that's another post for another time)

I don't say it often, or ever lol but... WORK!

* I stole the post title from lyrics from a song she had way back when she rocked the red braids, lol.  I had to :)

April Showers

I'm starting to think I need to invest in some of these.  I'm so sick of this dreary wet weather.  I want real spring: warmth, sun, the smell of fresh cut grass.  Until then, I better accept the fact that rainboots are gonna become my staple shoe.

Product Review: L'oreal Ever Strong Reconstructing Conditioner

In my attempts to cut down on products I have to admit I was doing pretty well.  Up until I hit Target.  I don't know what it is about this store but I buy everything!  This purchase was somewhat justified, I had run out of conditioner.  I had moisturizer and butters and oils for days but nothing to wash my hair with.

The doctor in me likes to diagnose myself with things.  Because of a post on Natural Selection, I've come to the conclusion that I have mostly fine hair.  I have a lot of hair but most of the strands themselves are fine and fragile.  Which means the name "EverStrong" drew me immediately.  First off the smell I could live without,  it reminds me of the Suave Rosemary Mint conditioner but stronger.  Not a fan. All I can say about is it this, it's creamy, it's lightweight, it's decent.  I hate the bottle design because I have to fight to get the product out.  I don't feel any difference in the strength of my hair and I've been using this for quite some time.  What I like is that it rinses out easily but that's about it.  It's one of those, I'll use it if I have to conditioners.

Truthfully I probably won't buy this again.

My Verdict: 2/5

Product Review: Yes to Cucumbers conditioner

Another Target purchase.  While buying the L'oreal Ever Strong I had the thoughts of "OMG what if I hate it I need a back up"  Now instead of buying a conditioner that I know and love like HE Totally Twisted, I ventured into the unknown again.  I ran over to the "Yes to" section and grabbed this bottle.  Why? Because everyone speak so highly about it and of course I had got to see for myself.

I'm really happy that I did.  It's a lightweight creamy conditioner that really makes my hair feel soft and moisturized.  What I've been noticing is that my hair responds better to lighter conditioner because the strands of hair are so fine.  There are plenty of posts on YouTube or on blogs where girls swear by leaving a little bit of their co-wash conditioner in their hair, not rinsing it all out.  I can't do that.  My hair looks dull and white.  So I need something light because I need it all to be rinsed out. I also need to guarantee that my hair and scalp feels free and clear of the buildup of the stuff I use over the course of the week and this does just that.

I like that fact that there's not a heavy scent to it.  It reminds me of spring, as cheesy as that may sound.  It's refreshing without being overpowering.

Another plus to this is that it's been lasting a really long time and it's affordable.  It was about 7 or 8 bucks at Target.

This conditioner is most likely become a staple in my hair regimen.

If you have fine hair that is weighed down easily, this is a pretty good alternative to the heavier stuff out there

My Verdict : 4/5

Kinky Twist Removal

My kinky twists are out and they were a huge pain in the butt.  As nice as it was to wake up late for a few weeks the removal process drove me nuts.  All the hair that shed naturally is wrapped around the end of my hair and it's been hell to detangle.  I think I'm staying away from those for a while.  If I decide to go into a protective style, I think I'm gonna try the crochet braids again.  I think it's the perfect spring style, if only spring would finally arrive here in NY

Spring Awakenings

Spring is officially here in a few days and I'm excited.  Spring and Fall are my two favorite seasons because of the clothes I get to wear and the mild weather. This year I've been looking at a lot of corals and greens.  I love the pairing of either of those colors with navy.  LOVE!  Once I make my way to the stores for my spring shopping trip, it's gonna be a problem.
